How much space is required to deliver a container?
A tilt-deck delivery needs considerably more room than the container footprint. The truck must back into alignment, raise the trailer and pull forward in a straight line while the container rolls onto the prepared surface.

As a rule, when receiving a 20 foot cargo container we require 70 feet of clear, straight-line space to back in and place the container correctly. A 40 foot storage container generally requires 110 feet of clear space for roll-off delivery.
When the truck arrives, the driver tilts the trailer upward so the container begins rolling onto the prepared surface. The truck then pulls ahead while the container settles flat in its final position.
- Confirm firm, level ground and the final door direction.
- Keep the approach clear of vehicles, fences, trees and people.
- Check overhead wires, branches, eaves and other obstructions.
Prepare the approach before dispatch
The 70-foot and 110-foot measurements are practical planning guidelines, not guarantees for every property. Slope, soft ground, tight turns, roadway width, fences, buildings, overhead utilities and the requested door direction can require more room or different equipment.
